Teaser

A parlay variant that lets the bettor shift the spread or total in their favor across each leg, in exchange for reduced odds.

A teaser is a specialized variety of parlay that grants the bettor the ability to move the point spread or the total (over/under) by a predetermined number of points in their own favor on every leg. The price of that more agreeable line is a diminished payout relative to a conventional parlay struck at the original odds. Teasers find their natural home in NFL and NBA wagering, where point-driven scoring makes each line adjustment carry genuine weight.

As with any parlay, a teaser demands that all legs come through for the ticket to pay. What sets it apart is the engineered advantage of the shifted lines. Sportsbooks most often present standard teaser tiers of 6, 6.5, or 7 points in football, and 4, 4.5, or 5 points in basketball. The more points a bettor folds in, the smaller the payout becomes, since every added point of cushion lifts the probability that each individual leg succeeds.

Example

Consider a two-team, 6-point NFL teaser carrying a $50 stake:

  • Original line: Philadelphia Eagles -7.5 becomes Eagles -1.5 once the 6-point teaser adjustment is applied.
  • Original line: Under 48.5 in the Rams vs. 49ers game becomes Under 54.5 after the same adjustment.

A standard two-team, 6-point teaser is typically priced around -110. If both adjusted legs come in, your $50 wager returns roughly $95.45 ($45.45 profit). Played instead as a conventional parlay at their original odds, these two picks could return considerably more, but the teaser hands you a far better chance of winning by sliding each line 6 points in your direction.

Key Points

  • Points move in the bettor’s favor: A teaser’s signature trait is that spreads and totals are nudged to make each leg easier to hit, improving your odds on every selection.
  • Reduced payouts compared to standard parlays: The price of those friendlier lines is a lighter payout. The more points you tease, the less the ticket returns.
  • All legs must win: As with a standard parlay, every selection must be correct. A single losing leg sinks the entire teaser.
  • Most effective with key numbers in football: Sharp bettors frequently concentrate on teasing through NFL key numbers (such as 3 and 7), since a large share of games are decided by those margins, magnifying the value of the line shift.
  • Push rules vary by sportsbook: Some books treat a push on one leg as a loss for the whole teaser, while others drop the teaser by a leg and recompute the payout. Always confirm the house rules before placing one.
